Fundoscopy

Fundoscopy

What is a fundus examination and how is it performed? Fundus examination is performed to evaluate the health of the retina and optic nerve, and includes the use of drops to dilate the pupil and special devices to examine the internal parts of the eye. The examination is used to diagnose eye diseases and some general diseases such as diabetes and high blood pressure.

What is meant by the fundus of the eye?

fundus-of-the-eye
The eyeball consists of two basic segments: the anterior segment and the posterior segment. The anterior section consists primarily of the cornea, iris, and lens of the eye, and the posterior section consists primarily of the retina with all its parts and the optic nerve. Examination of the components of the posterior section of the eyeball is shortened to fundus examination

What is the fundus made of?

The fundus of the eye consists of several parts, such as the optic nerve and the retina, which in turn consists of several parts, such as the center of vision, in addition to the veins and arteries of the retina

Fundus examination?

First, drops are placed to examine the fundus of the eye (pupil dilatation drops) until the pupil dilates, making it easier to see what is inside the eye, knowing that at a few times and under certain conditions it is possible to see the fundus of the eye without using the drops designated for dilating the pupil. After the pupil dilates, the ophthalmologist uses special devices and lenses to see the fundus of the eye.
Dr. Mustafa Azab’s clinic is equipped with more than one device to examine the fundus of the eye to obtain the best diagnostic methods and thus reach the appropriate treatment plan

Reasons for fundus examination

— In some cases, it is not possible to make an accurate vision measurement without examining the fundus of the eye, especially in children (and some adult cases as well)
— Many diseases can be diagnosed, especially those that affect the posterior parts of the eye, such as cataracts, glaucoma, retinal diseases, and the optic nerve.
Some brain diseases affect the optic nerve of the eye, so diagnosing some neurological diseases requires a fundus examination
Some systemic and chronic diseases, such as diabetes and high blood pressure, affect the retina and the visual center, so monitoring and treating such diseases properly requires periodic fundus examination.
— The fundus of the eyes of premature infants (children born before the ninth month and admitted to a nursery) must be examined at the age of one month to rule out retinopathy of premature infants.
— The fundus of newborns should be examined, even without a complaint or specific observation, in order to rule out birth defects and some hereditary diseases and tumors (to learn more: Children’s eye services</ a>)
—  The fundus of the eye must be examined before any intervention or surgical procedure, such as strabismus and cataract correction operations, and laser vision correction
